History Behind Transponder Keys
The use of vehicle transponders was really first introduced as a result of the German Insurance companies which refused to underwrite vehicles that did not have some form of passive electronic immobilization. This passive means meant that no action had to be undertaken by the user to arm the system. Transmitter + Responder = Transponder. Thus key transponders were born.
A transponder system usually consists of two primary components. The first being the processor/interrogator and the second, a microchip (transponder) embedded within the head of the key. Since most transponder keys now all look different based on vehicle type and model, the processor usually interacts with the fuel injection and varied other vehicle electronics systems.
How Does A Transponder Key Work?
When you try to start the vehicle with a transponder key, the interrogator sends a burst of Radio Frequency (RF) energy which is calibrated at a defined frequency. It goes to an antenna which usually surrounds the face of the ignition cylinder. As this transponder contains a tuned circuit matched to the frequency of the RF burst, a small voltage is generated by induction within the transponder chip. The result: The induced voltage causes the transponder chip to emit, by RF, it's individual code number which is a thirty two (32) digit number, which can also contain alpha numeric characters.
When the processor recognizes the returned code number, it allows the starter motor, fuel pump and/or fuel injection systems to function, which allows the vehicle to start. As long as the vehicle remains running, there is no problem. If the vehicle stops, that means a faulty or absent transponder is being used and a replacement must be found.
In recent times, you could say that it is the processor/interrogator module that is programmed with which key is allowed start privileges. The transponder chip is only an identification number for the key in which it is embedded. Interestingly enough, the amount of time it takes to start, to send and stop the transmission of the code number is a factor as to whether the processor will accept the code. Some manufacturers employ similar techniques, others have small differences. Most of the prominent manufacturers in transponder technology are Philips, Texas Instruments and Megamos, which each have their own nuances regarding replacement keys and such.
It is also possible for some transponder keys to be duplicated, by using reader/encoding hardware and software and writable transponder chips. In other cases, these encoding values have to be introduced (programmed) into the processor/Interrogator to be functional.

Use Common Sense When Calling A Locksmith
Samson’s Lock and Safe would like you to be aware of some online impostors and activity which is happening around our city and many others here in the US. As licensed locksmiths we agree with many and are warning consumers about a new breed of online impostors.
These imposters are being termed “ghost locksmiths” . What they are doing is placing deceptive Google advertisements that make it seem like they operate out of storefronts on main streets around America when they are not. The truth of the matter is that these ads are simply ads that are not backed up by a brick and mortar store in the local city the ad is placed in. Usually a legitimate Google ad is a local merchants, however in this case scenario, they anonymous, unlicensed men who call themselves locksmiths. Hence they get the name, “ghost locksmith”. If you try to look into any further information they can’t be found.
Be cautious when phoning or responding to ads for locksmiths, proper investigation is a good way to prevent deception. Many are using fictitious addresses trying to make you think they are local. The end result is the locksmith industry which is a legitimate business that serves cities around the nation are getting a black eye and made to look like rip off artists.
There are many states here like New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York which require locksmiths to go through licensing process’ to provide services to the communities they serve.
New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York City all require locksmiths go through some sort of licensing process. In turn which require that certification in writing in the form of a proper ID card which must be presented like a drivers license.
It is reported that NBC in New York did some investigating and found that when a response was made and a locksmith appeared, they could not be identified by a vehicle with a company name, or even produce a state mandated ID card to perform the type of locksmith services they had called for.
In New Jersey, classes must be completed with over 40 hours of training and criminal background checks performed. This certification lends itself to being both visible and easy to find in a standard business setting. Phantom locksmith storefronts usually have multiple phone numbers, quote low introductory pricing, but usually refuse to guarantee a final price for specific types of services. Their vehicles are typically unmarked, and their staffs are not wearing uniforms with name tags. Business cards are not something readily available either, all of which speak volumes to a potential client. Common sense usually dictates a red flag about a business person who doesn’t fit any of the normal criteria associated with a legitimate business in a storefront.
Consumer Affairs in various states have a lot of information about these so call ghost locksmiths, and through various complaints encourages consumers to file complaints properly if they suspect an unlicensed locksmith has responded to their home or locked-out vehicle.
